People have surprisingly strong opinions about how other people should press buttons. Ask whether a controller or keyboard and mouse is better for an MMORPG and you’ll find plenty of arguments for both. Keyboard players have more keys and quick access to menus. Controller players have analogue movement and the ability to lean back without arranging their left hand into some sort of combat spider.

Unfortunately for anyone hoping I’ll pick a side, I use both. I play Final Fantasy XIV on PC, so my keyboard and mouse sit exactly where you’d expect them to. My controller lives beside me until I need it, and apparently I’ve developed very specific ideas about when that is.

If I’m moving, give me the controller

I spent most of my gaming life playing purely on consoles. I only moved into PC gaming around six years ago, so a controller is still where I’m most comfortable. I can move around using a keyboard and mouse. I simply don’t do it particularly well.

The moment I’m running through Eorzea, travelling between quests or doing anything that requires me to properly control my character, I reach for the controller. Movement with analogue sticks feels natural because that’s what my hands learned first. I don’t have to think about which key moves me sideways or where my fingers need to be. My thumbs already know what they’re doing.

Usually. We need to leave ourselves some room for personal responsibility when I walk directly off a platform.

Battle content is 100% controller

This becomes non-negotiable when combat starts. I do all of my FFXIV battle content on controller: dungeons, trials, raids, bosses, running out of enormous glowing circles that are politely informing me I’m about to die. If something is trying to murder me, the controller is in my hands.

I’m not switching over to the mouse halfway through a fight or reaching for the keyboard to use certain abilities. My combat setup is on the controller. Could I learn to play the same content with keyboard and mouse? Probably. Plenty of people do, and plenty prefer it.

But I’d have to spend time teaching my hands something they don’t currently do instinctively just to replace a setup that already works for me. That’s where a lot of controller vs keyboard and mouse arguments lose me.

Input methods are muscle memory, not moral positions

There are legitimate differences between the two. A keyboard gives you an enormous number of keys within reach, while a mouse gives you precise pointing and direct access to things on screen. Controllers have fewer physical buttons, but games with good controller support can build systems around that limitation.

FFXIV is particularly good at this. Its Cross Hotbar was designed specifically around controller play, using the triggers and face buttons to give players access to their actions without requiring a keyboard full of keybinds.

But technical capability is only part of the question. There’s also the inconvenient lump of accumulated muscle memory sitting between the chair and the monitor. Someone who has spent years playing MMOs with keyboard and mouse may find controller combat completely alien. Hand that same controller to someone who grew up on consoles and the opposite can happen.

Neither person’s hands are making an objective statement about optimal MMORPG input methods. They’ve just had different training. Mine had several decades to become extremely opinionated before I gave them a keyboard.

But if I’m crafting, give me the mouse

This is where my fierce controller loyalty immediately evaporates. I craft a lot in FFXIV. I am, as previously established, a feral crafter. When I’m crafting, navigating menus, dealing with inventory or doing other interface-heavy things, I prefer keyboard and mouse.

The reason is spectacularly uncomplicated: it’s fewer clicks. If the thing I want is already visible on my screen, I can move the pointer directly to it and click it. With a controller, I may have to press several buttons or move through several selections to reach the same place.

Why would I do that to myself? I am loyal to my controller, not married to it.

MMORPGs involve a lot more than combat

This is also why I don’t find a simple “which one is better?” particularly useful for MMORPGs. An MMO asks me to do wildly different things with the same interface.

One minute I’m fighting something enormous while watching mechanics, managing abilities and trying not to stand somewhere stupid. The next I’m going through crafting menus. Then I’m checking inventory, dealing with retainers, looking at glamour, decorating a house or chatting with somebody. These activities don’t necessarily benefit from the same input method.

For combat and movement, I want the controller because controlling my character feels more natural that way. For crafting and menu-heavy activities, I want the mouse because I can directly point at whatever I’m trying to use. So I switch.

This has never struck me as particularly strange until I started thinking about how often people frame controller and keyboard as opposing camps. They’re peripherals. They don’t require allegiance.

Keyboard and mouse aren’t worse for me. I’m worse at them.

I think this distinction matters. It would be easy for me to say that controller movement is better because it feels dramatically better when I use it. But I’ve also spent most of my life practising one and comparatively little time practising the other. That’s hardly a controlled experiment.

I didn’t grow up playing PC games and discover that keyboard movement was objectively inferior. I grew up on consoles and arrived at PC gaming with years of controller muscle memory already installed. If I’d spent those same years playing games with WASD movement and dozens of keyboard shortcuts, I might have completely different preferences now.

So when somebody tells me keyboard and mouse are better for most RPGs, I’m not particularly interested in arguing with them. They may very well be better for that person. Meanwhile, I’ll be over here with my controller until I need to open a menu.

Good controller support matters more than controller support

There is an important difference between a game technically allowing you to connect a controller and actually designing an interface that feels good to use with one. FFXIV works for me because controller play doesn’t feel like an afterthought. The interface gives me a way to access the actions I need during combat while keeping my hands on the controller.

That matters enormously in an MMORPG. These games can have a frankly unreasonable number of abilities, menus and systems. Simply mapping a few keyboard inputs onto controller buttons isn’t enough if reaching everything else becomes an expedition.

The same is true in reverse. A PC interface should take advantage of having a mouse instead of making me click through something that was obviously designed around controller navigation. If both input methods are available, I want each one to be good at being itself.

The best setup is the one you stop thinking about

This is where I’d preserve the remainder of the existing conclusion but apply the same rule: connected thoughts stay together, and the final punchline can have room if it genuinely benefits from it.
